Discussion Exercises

  • Discuss what life would have been like to be a student attending school in the late 1800’s to early 1900’s

  • Discuss the difference between education for white children and black children in the late 1800’s and late 1900’s.

Writing Exercises

  • Ask students to write a paper on their experience at Rural Hill

  • Ask students to write a journal about their experiences as a student during the 1890’s.

  • Ask the students to write a paper on what life would have been like for them as a student attending Davidson (school for white children) or Bethesda Schoolhouse (school for black children)

  • Write a paper on the differences between attending school at Bethesda and Davidson, and explain whether you believe it was good or bad to keep races apart from one another in attending school

  • Compare and contrast the difference between life on a farm and life in the city. What are the advantages and disadvantages of living on a farm compared to living in the city.

  • Discuss the type of animals and crops you would see on a working farm of the piedmont North Carolina region

Writing Exercises 

  • Ask students to write a paper on what it would have been like to have been a farm hand at Rural Hill during the 1940’s.

  • Ask students to write a paper on what chores would have been done by children in the 1940’s.

  • Create a schedule of what a child’s day would have been like growing up on a farm and a schedule of a child growing up in the city

Discussion Exercises

  • Discuss with students what they believe FREEDOM means

  • Discuss what life was like for John and Violet Davidson and others just starting out in the 1760’s.

Writing Exercises 

  • Ask students to write a paper on what it would have been like for John and Violet Davidson first starting out at Rural Hill.

  • Ask the students to write a paper on what life would have been like as a soldier in the American Revolution (Either British or American).

  • Ask students to write a paper on what they think life would have been like as a slave at Rural Hill during the Colonial time.

  • Write a journal on what life might have been like for William Taburn as a black soldier in the American Revolution.

  •  Write a paper either in favor or against that the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence was an actual document written by our forefathers. Explain the reasons why yes or no.

  • Create a journal of all the wildlife and plant life around Rural Hill during the time John and Violet Davidson lived at Rural Hill-Draw or take photos of the type of animals and plants in the area to include descriptions

  • Create a Crossword Puzzle using the names below
