THE 2009 RURAL HILL AMAZING MAIZE MAZE “GO GREEN” ENERGY MAZE IS SET TO BEGIN SEPTEMBER 10
August 12, 2009

HUNTERSVILLE, NC:  Find the clues and play the game… Set to open for a fall season of fun September 10 through November 1, the Rural Hill Amazing Maize Maze is a seven acre labyrinth with approximately two and a half miles of pathways in a working corn field.  Who has fun in the ‘cornfusion’? “Families, friends, church groups, school groups, corporate outings…you name it,” says Rural Hill executive director Ed McLean. “We have mommies pushing strollers, young people on dates, and gatherings of friends.  It truly is a fun time for everyone.”  The Amazing Maize Maze is designed to be navigated in 1-2 hours and there are volunteers and staff available to help when needed.  The Rural Hill Amazing Maize Maze is an imaginative use of a corn field so comfortable shoes are suggested.  Water stations are on site and visitors are permitted to bring in their own food and non-alcoholic beverages.  Vendors will be onsite with snacks, ice cream, soft drinks and water available for purchase.  Hayrides and a bounce house and inflatable fun slide are available for an additional charge on Saturdays and Sundays.  Beginning in October, Rural Hill’s home-grown pumpkins will also be available for purchase!  Please visit our www.ruralhill.net for full details for planning your visit.

This year’s Rural Hill Amazing Maize Maze theme is ENERGY with a focus on solar energy, wind energy and agriculture.  McLean comments, “We chose the theme for the energy maze after dealing with our energy shortage in 2008. We want to help educate our guests about the potential use of alternative sources of energy that are used on farms and how long that they have been used.”  He also notes, “Here at Rural Hill, we are into the recycling of waste products from horses into fertilizer that is then used on our fields.  Farmer “Eddie” is in charge of conserving energy and our “GO GREEN” program.”

Through a partnership with the American Maize Company, Rural Hill grows its corn maze each year for visitors to come out and experience the farm and enjoy some great entertainment.  Corn mazes began making a strong presence in the 1970’s as a means of helping provide entertainment to local residents, but more importantly provide a source of income to farmers trying to hold on to their farms. Today as part of the increasing agri-tourism developing in America, many historic farms as well as active farms grow these magical fields of fun.  It’s a great way to spend the day and help preserve America’s agricultural heritage.
