HUNTERSVILLE, NC: In the
“hornet’s nest of rebellion,” the American struggle for independence
took place throughout North Carolina including battles in and near
Huntersville in 1781. On May 17 & 18, 2008, Rural Hill’s Spirit of
the Hornet’s Nest will recreate the events which took place during
that important time. Visitors will have the opportunity to walk
through the camps and experience the sites and smells of life in
both British and American armies. Gates open at 10 AM on both
Saturday and Sunday, with drill and weapon demonstrations at 10 AM
and the battle reenactments at 2 PM. Saturday will be the Battle of
Cowan’s Ford, and Sunday will be the Battle of Weitzel’s Mill.

student militia, craftsmen and artisans, Colonial merchandise
vendors, guest speakers and book signings, and the Rural Hill

The British Commander General Cornwallis famously
wrote that Charlotte was "a hornet's nest of rebellion." In
January 1781, Cornwallis and his British legion began their march
northward from Charlotte to pursue the American Southern Army under
the command of General Nathanael Greene. Cornwallis moved toward
Lincolnton and then headed toward present day Huntersville. On
February 1, 1781, American troops were positioned on the banks of
the Catawba River under the leadership of General William Lee
Davidson to meet the advancing British army - thus began the Battle
of Cowan’s’ Ford. Then on March 6, 1781, at what became known as
the Battle of Weitzel’s Mill, Cornwallis marched his whole army
directly for Greene at High Rock Ford.
