History
of the Rural Hill Maze
Mazes date back hundreds
of years. There have been mazes created out of boxes, houses, gardens and
forests. But what about a corn maze! Corn mazes began making a strong
presence in the 1970’s as a means of helping provide entertainment to local
residence, but more importantly provide a source of income to farmers trying
to hold on to their farms. Today as part of the increasing agri-tourism
developing in
America many historic farms as well as active farms grow these magical
fields of fun. It’s challenging and can also be frustrating at times. But in
the end it’s a great way to spend the day and help preserve
America’s
agricultural heritage.
In 1998 the staff at
Rural Hill contacted the
American
Maize Company based in
New York. Other Amazing
Maze sponsored corn mazes were already in the works, but primarily in the
northeast. Through cooperation with their assistance Rural Hill grows its
corn maze each year for visitors to come out and
experience the farm and enjoy some great entertainment.
