The Loch Norman Highland Games
Rural Hill Centre of Scottish Heritage
Huntersville, North Carolina

The Loch Norman Highland Games is a labor of love for the Catawba Valley Scottish Society.

It is a special gathering on a glorious spring weekend where you can share a little hospitality, make life long friends and enjoy a Scottish community reunion.

As you enter the field, the smell of wood fires, the whirling tartan clad dancers and the sound of the pipes, the sense of being in another time and place is overwhelming. There is a physical sense of finally finding the family you belong to. You can check with more than 90 Scottish Clans, Family Societies and Heritage organizations to find long lost cousins and your place in this great history.

Did you hear that… the music has a familiar sound… a rhythm and beat that draws you to it… with stories of bravery, perseverance and audacity… William Wallace, Robert the Bruce, lovers and fighters and mothers and sons… and then you realize it is a tune your grandmother used to sing.

Over the years there has been a lot of discussion in scientific circles about the possibility of cell or genetic memory. We think the issue could be decided if they were able to explain what is it that would call anyone to play the Great Highland Bagpipe.

Why would anyone want to dance a thousand year old war dance on their toes? Why would anyone want to throw a 56 lb weight higher or further than anyone else… no, wait… we know why they want to do that… that’s a guy thing.

If you have what is called the Celtic toe (see Uncle Dick’s toes), where the big toe is shorter or equal to the length of the next toe, it is likely you have Celtic heritage. It does not mean that you can’t be of Scottish heritage if you do not have the Celtic toe. Scotland was a melting pot culture… equal opportunity opportunists… Picts, Scots, Romans, Vikings, Angles Saxons and we have all heard the story about the daughter of the pharaoh and the one about the lost tribe of Israel.

So… check your toes… check the Schedule of Events for the time, check the program for the place of the kids events, seminars and competitions that you, too, can enter on the field… and check the real world at the front gate for the weekend.

The pipes are calling. Come play with us at the Loch Norman Highland Games at historic Rural Hill.
You don’t have to be Scottish to enjoy the food, fun and camaraderie of competition.

We don’t check toes at the front gate. All are welcome here!
